What is Family Systems Theory and Systems Theory?
Family Systems Theory is a foundational psychological framework that views individuals not as isolated units, but as part of interconnected emotional systems. Rather than locating distress solely within a single person, this approach emphasizes how patterns of interaction, communication, and emotional regulation within families shape behavior, coping, and mental health over time. Family Systems Theory focuses mostly on the family system, versus other systems at work. Family Systems Theory is NOT Family Therapy. (I do not offer family therapy). In individual therapy, a systems lens allows clients to explore family-of-origin dynamics, relational triggers, and boundary patterns, even when other family members are not present.
Systems theory is similar to Family Systems Theory, but it extends to systems beyond the family system. It is an interdisciplinary framework used to understand how society works by observing how individuals interact and adapt to their environment. It emphasizes the complexity of relationships and dependencies that shape behavior and outcomes. This approach shows how each component—concerning either an individual, group, or organization—affects and is affected by the entire system. By understanding this, systems theory helps develop strategies to improve and optimize these relationships.
